Discussion about Regis - Manbait
Rias
As far as instant gratification goes, you know you're getting your money's worth by the time the heavy bass drones of He Was Human And Belonged With Humans (Regis Version) kick in. From there on it's a voyage departing from the tick-tock drum programming of Blood Witness through to the crawling d'n'b-ish C U 1, the industrial strokes of Blinding Horses, the post punk and dark wave tinges of Plant Lilies At My Head (Alternate Version), coming full circle with the revelatory remix of This Foundry. You must get it by now. This is a twelve track overview of everything noteworthy that Karl O'Connor has done during the past five years. No need to dig deeper. If I was to be looking for a needle in a haystack, I'd tell you to go add the remixes he did for Tommy Four Seven and Moncia Hits The Ground in order to make the center crown jewel shine even brighter, but that's just me poking you in the eye with my index finger.Anyways, just as that 2000 compilation on Downwards displayed the might and firmness with which Regis dominated the techno spectrum then, this compilation puts your mind at ease, reassuring the listener that he's very much on the top of the game now. Gone may be the opressive repetitive rhythms, lunging sound patterns and mono endowed bass lines, however they are skillfully replaced by post punkish attitude, scary atmospherics, creepy, broken beat laden tunes loaded with echoes of hopeless desperation. Not everything would rock a dance floor, but then again not everything should. For an overview of the man's recenter work, this is a no brainer. The dozen tracks laid out across this CD surface are a spot on display of Regis' vision of electronic vision after the timely demise of Sandwell District. The packaging. The cover art is a sword's edge away of sensational. Was this Val Denham painting to hit an auction any time soon, it'd easily go for a king's ransom. That said, pity this is a two panel digipak, printed on pretty thin cardboard too. In tune with, well, virtually all of Regis' previous albums, there is little to none information provided, or interesting text to read. The music is magnificent though - thank God. As some have already pointed out, the 2xLP of this release is - I have to agree - senselessly overpriced. The compact disc version is more down to earth, price wise, plus you get more music for less dough. Yet however, the quality of the sleeve does not really instill much hope, as under my finger tips, it feels like something that would evaporate in a year or so.Esthetical traits aside, this is a visceral dive into the opus of one of Europe's key independent techno artists since the genre hit the continent. It's maturation as much as it's augmentation and consolidation. There's a lot of pristine stuff to rinse out here. Do not miss, even even if you're not the most ardent Regis follower.
